OVERVIEW
The impressive 42-story, 512 room Embassy Suites Hotel Niagara Falls, directly overlooks the famed Horseshoes Falls. Management was interested in a technology for its cooling tower water treatment system that would reduce energy costs while avoiding the handling and storing of toxic chemicals in the hotel, creating a safer environment for the staff and guests.
COOLING SYSTEM CHALLENGES
The hotel has two cooling towers (210 Capacity each -Induced Draft Counterflow) and 2 Carrier Chillers in operation since 2004.
The primary requirement of the facility is to eliminate toxic discharge. The facility is connected to a storm sewer with strict discharge regulations. A conventional “all chemical” solution is not sustainable.
SOLUTION
The evandtec™ EnviroTower™ system, including ancillary instrumentation and controls, was installed in August 2004.
RESULTS
Upon inspection at the end of the first full cooling season (October, 2005), the chiller condenser tubes on both chillers had no discernable sign of scale or fouling.
Conditions on the cooling tower had greatly improved based on inspection:
- Previously visible scale had completed disappeared in the sump, on the sides of the cooling tower, and covering the sump float and vertical sump valve assembly
- Recirculating water was clear with no visible turbidity
- Biofouling evidence was absent and no slime or algae was visible
The hotel is estimated to achieve significant energy savings, lower maintenance costs and longer equipment life from installing evandtec’s EnviroTower system:
- Lower electricity costs due to more efficient heat transfer from the elimination of scale and fouling on the chillers
- Elimination of labor cost from “rodding out” the chiller
- Extension of equipment life due to reduced corrosion rates
