Fresh & Easy Reducing Store Water Consumption by 50%
OVERVIEW Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is a chain ofgrocery storesin the western United States, headquartered inEl Segundo, California. It is a subsidiary ofTesco, the world's third largest retailer. As part of their green building initiative, their goal is to reduce the impact on the environment wherever possible, build simple and efficient stores, and keep their operating costs down, and therefore customer prices low.
COOLING SYSTEM CHALLENGES Reducing energy and water usage has been a major goal for Fresh & Easy. On average, Fresh & Easy stores use 30% less energy than a typical supermarket and the company’s refrigeration systems were using roughly 1,561,000 gallons of water per year per site. Fresh and Easy utilizes water cooled refrigeration systems as they are very energy efficient. The problem was their high water use and the undesirable chemicals used to protect their equipment and prevent biological growth.
SOLUTION Using a physical water treatment system from evandtec, Fresh and Easy could reduce water use dramatically while eliminating the use of harmful chemicals to treat their water. This increases the energy efficiency through cleaner systems as well.
RESULTS With the implementation of the EnviroTower Conditioning system by evandtec, that usage has dropped to less than 741,000 per year per store, or a reduction of over 50%, while keeping their systems clear of scale and bacteria growth. Similar refrigeration systems in typical supermarkets can use 2 to 3 million gallons of water per year, creating an even bigger opportunity for savings.
With all of their 131 sites retrofitted with this system the chain expects to reduce water use by 107,420,000 gallons per year or the equivalent of 735.75 households average use.
“Incorporating evandtec’s technology into our stores makes sense, not just as part of our commitment to the environment, but also help us save money so we can keep our prices low for our customers,” said Steve Hagen, Fresh & Easy Director of Procurement and Engineering. “Conserving water is a very important issue in California, Nevada and Arizona. We are happy to play our part in reducing our consumption of this valuable and limited resource.”
